    Chowrasia ends tied 9th

    SSP Chowrasia was the lone Indian to avoid an over-par with an even-par 71 in the final round to sign off a creditable ninth in with a total of three under 287 at the Andalucia Valderrama Masters golf tournament. Other Indians, Jeev Milkha Singh (76) was ended tied 14th with a total of five-over 289. Shiv Kapur finished in the bottom half of the leaderboard at tied 44th.

    Woods not surprised at slip

    Tiger Woods says it was no surprise to lose golf's No. 1 ranking to England's Lee Westwood after struggling through a disappointing year. Woods, who had been the world's No. 1 golfer for 281 weeks said on Monday "As far as the world ranking is concerned, yes, I'm not ranked No. 1 in the world. In order to do that you have to win and I didn't win this year."

    Bopanna at career-best 14th

    Runners-up at the St. Petersburg Open, Rohan Bopanna reached career-best doubles ranking of number 14 as his partner Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi got back the number six rank. As a team they moved one place up to keep their World Tour Finals hopes alive. While Mahesh Bhupathi slid to 15th in individual doubles ranking, Leander Paes was static on number five.

    Ferdinand out of CL match

    Defender Rio Ferdinand will miss Manchester United's Champions League match at Bursaspor. United gave no reason for the absence of the England centre back, who played the full 90 minutes of his team's 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur Saturday. "Ferdinand... will not feature in Tuesday's clash with the Turkish champions," the club's website said.

    Swann suffers thumb injury

    England spinner Graeme Swann suffered an injury to his right thumb while batting during the team's first full training session in Australia ahead of the Ashes series. Swann applied strapping to his thumb Monday but an England spokesman said the injury wasn't serious and the 31-year-old Swann remained available for the match against Western Australia state starting Friday. The first of five Ashes tests begins Nov. 25 in Brisbane. England won the last series 2-1 in England last year but has not won a series in Australia since 1986-87.

    Pietersen sulks over WAG ban

    The ban on England players' wives and girlfriends until six weeks into the Ashes has not gone down too well with mercurial batsman Kevin Pietersen, who said the prospect of having to stay away from his family "is not something I'm looking forward to." Speaking about his family Pietersen said, "They're due to arrive on December 10 or 11."

    Butt, Amir blast ICC

    Pakistan's Salman Butt and Mohammad Amir on Monday launched a scathing attack on the ICC, after it had rejected their appeals against suspension for alleged involvement in spot fixing, in a tribunal hearing in Dubai. The two players claimed the ICC had shown no evidence, apart from what the 'News of the World' tabloid had published against them, and reiterated that the allegations were a conspiracy to defame Pakistan cricket.
