Ahmedabad, Nov 20 (PTI) Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated "Khel Mahakumbh", a sporting event as part of the state''s golden jubilee year celebrations in which over 16 lakh youths will be taking part. Gold medallist from Gujarat at the just-concluded Commonwealth Games Lajja Goswami led the torch rally for the event.
World chess champion Vishwanath Anand was also present on the occasion. Modi said he aims to create a sports culture and sporting spirit in the state, make sports an inseparable part of life of youths, and wants to build a talent pool of outstanding sportspersons, through this month-long Mahakumbh.
"It is regrettable that we as a nation of 100 crore people cannot win many medals in the international sporting events," Modi said. Referring to the Khel Mahakumbh, he said, "Nearly 16 lakh people taking part in a single sports event is in itself a history.
I do not expect wonders from just this one sports meet. It is just a beginning.
" The sporting event will start at panchayat level, then it will be played at taluka level and subsequently at district level. Individuals and teams qualifying at district level will then play at state level competitions.
The highlights of the opening ceremony attended by a large number of people were yoga feats by 3,500 students, theme song, myriad dance forms to the drumbeats of percussion instruments from different parts of the country.
