Pune, Nov 24 (PTI) Long distance runners from 25 countries will vie for top honours in the silver jubilee edition of the Uninor Pune International Marathon, which has been given the status of the Asian Marathon to be held here on December 5. So far more than 150 athletes from foreign countries had confirmed their participation in the Rs 45-lakh prize money meet, PIMT organising secretary Pralhad Sawant told the media persons here today.
"The Indians have always been making the event memorable by their overwhelming response and this year too will witness over 25,000 athletes competing in various age-group races apart from men and women sections respectively," Sawant said. The PIMT this time, in an added attraction, has decided to revive the women''s full marathon which will be held alongside the men''s event.
Long distance runners from African powerhouse like Ethopia, Kenya and Tanzania will be the main attraction along with the Chinese and the Japanese runners. Other countries in the fray include Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Hong Kong, Russia, United States, Qatar, Syria, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Mongolia, Indonesia, Iran, Nepal, Mauritius, Belarus and hosts India.
The Asian runners will be ranked as it has been given the status of the Asian Marathon Championship for them to qualify for the World Marathon Championship.
