New Delhi, Apr 26 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader V.K. Malhotra was on Tuesday appointed as the acting chief of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
The developments came after IOA's influential President Kalmadi was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on charges of cheating, conspiracy and corruption for his alleged role in the AM Films and Swiss Time scams.
This was discussed at the meting of the IOA office bearers and the senior bearers of NFSs.
As per the IOA Constitution Rule 13 (b): "In the absence of the President, the senior vice president shall preside over the meetings. In the event of prolonged absence of the President, the senior vice president will take over the duties and responsibilities of the President during the period of absence."
Union Sports Minister Ajay Maken had on Monday proposed to write to the IOA to elect a new president in case incumbent Suresh Kalmadi is arrested by the CBI on charges of corruption.
Kalmadi, who was arrested by the investigating agency on Monday, was today sent to police custody for eight days.
The CBI had earlier asked Kalmadi to appear before it on Monday to clarify some new issues, which surfaced during the visit of the agency's officials to London in connection with Queen's Baton Relay scam.
Kalmadi had earlier expressed his inability to appear before the CBI citing his foreign visit, saying he would return home only after April 19. But even after returning from his visit abroad, he did not turn up before the sleuths, saying he was still not in Delhi, sources said.
Kalmadi has been accused of sanctioning payments to AM Films and AM Car at rates that were hugely inflated. (ANI)
