National Under-13 champion G.K. Monnisha of Chennai scored a lucky upset victory over Sonakshi Rathore of Rajasthan in the fourth round of the RMK Residential School National Sub-Junior Girls Chess Championship here on Wednesday.
Second seed Sonakshi kept winning pawns with black pieces and dominated the game against the ninth seeded opponent.
Using a faulty combination on move 62, Sonakshi lost two rooks and gained only one rook and a pawn to suffer her first defeat.
Three players, Monnisha, Michelle Catherina and G. Lasya are leading with four points. Seven rounds remain to be played. Michelle of Chennai created passed pawns on both flanks to win a 53-move opposite colour bishop ending against Madhurima Shekhar of Delhi.
Drawn encounters in the lead tables of the boys group saw unfancied Tamil Nadu players, M. Siddarth and Pranav Vijay move into joint lead with four points.
Top seed Sai Krishna of Vijayawada and fourth seed M.N. Shaikh of Mumbai are among the players who share the third place with 3.5 points.
Siddarth played the opposite colour bishop ending with plenty of skill. He created outside passed pawns and overloaded the enemy bishop to defeat Chaithanyaa in 61 moves with the black pieces.
Pranav Vijay kept his pieces active all through in the rook and minor piece ending to win with a pawn promotion against Prasannaa in 50 moves.
The highest seed to fall on this single round day was Girish Koushik of Mysore who lost to his Karnataka team-mate Augustin. Girish has lost 1.5 points already by way of a draw earlier and a defeat today.
