Karthik, Marsh help Punjab beat Kochi in IPL

A rollicking century stand between Dinesh Karthik and Shaun Marsh led Kings XI Punjab to a six-wicket victory over Kochi Tuskers in the IPL on Friday.

Karthik (69) and Marsh (42) added 111 runs as Punjab scored 181-4 in 18.5 overs after having restricted Kochi to 178-7.

Punjab went through some tough moments as left-arm pace bowler Rudra Pratap Singh claimed 4-25, but Australian batsman David Hussey led the team home with an unbeaten 21 — completing the win with a six off Shantakumaran Sreesanth.

Kochi captain Mahela Jayawardene had helped his team post a challenging target with a 52-ball 76 containing two sixes and eight fours.

The win kept Punjab in contention with 10 points. Kochi also has 10 but has played a game more.

"I thought a 200 plus score was looking likely for Kochi but we pegged them back," Gilchrist said. "I'm really pleased with the bowlers and a comprehensive batting effort. It is always a happy environment when you are winning."

Karthik and Marsh put Punjab in firm control at 142-2 in 14 overs, but they both fell in the same over when Singh produced his second double-strike of the match.

Karthik clobbered five huge sixes and seven fours during his 33-ball knock before he was caught in the covers by Jayawardene, while the left-handed Marsh offered an easy return catch after hitting two sixes and five fours off 30 balls.

Punjab had earlier been slowed by the wickets in successive overs by Singh.

Singh had captain Adam Gilchrist caught behind by Parthiv Patel for 9 and then bowled opener Paul Valthaty off the thigh-pad for 17 as Punjab was reduced to 31-2.

Earlier, Jayawardene held the Kochi innings together with typical controlled aggression, reaching his fifth IPL half-century with a six to the cover boundary off legspinner Piyush Chawla.

Jayawardene seemed to hold himself back due to the regular fall of wickets in the latter part of the innings after Kochi had been on 122-1 in the 13th over.

The others to chip in for the new franchise were Brendon McCullum, who scored 32 off 27 balls, and England batsman Owais Shah, who got 23 off 12.

McCullum took two consecutive sixes off Australian swing bowler Ryan Harris before he was trapped lbw by left-arm spinner Bipul Sharma while trying to sweep.

Shah was doing a good job of creating space on the off side to smash the ball around but was run out when well set.

Bipul Sharma was the most successful bowler, taking 2-32 afte also accounting for Australian batsman Brad Hodge.
