Buchanan wants Wright as Kiwi selector

Wellington, May 18 (ANI): John Buchanan, director of New Zealand Cricket, is pushing for coach John Wright inclusion in the national selection panel on Friday.

A meeting of the New Zealand Cricket board will receive a paper presented by Buchanan about the panel and a recommendation to it.

New Zealand Cricket's chief executive, Justin Vaughan, said the paper was part of the process to appoint a new selection panel.

Buchanan is already on record as saying a coach should have as much authority as he wants to get the best from his charges, and Wright is understood to be keen on an official role, Stuff.co.nz reports.

It appeared the selectors, Mark Greatbatch (convener), Glenn Turner and newcomer Lance Cairns had differing views compared to Wright and captain Daniel Vettori over who they wanted to play from the 15-man squad during the five-match one-day series.

The next issue will centre on how many the panel will comprise. Previously, with Greatbatch and Vettori associated with the Black Caps on tour, only Turner was in New Zealand watching domestic matches.

While Wright will be involved with the Black Caps, the panel could be boosted to four or there could be a reduction to two plus Wright. (ANI)
