MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Rod Macqueen will step aside as the Melbourne Rebels Super 15 head coach after the weekend to join the club's board and become director of coaching.
The Rebels announced Thursday, on the eve of their last Super 15 match for 2011, that Macqueen's assistant Damien Hill has been appointed as head coach for the next two seasons.
Rebels chairman Howard Mitchell says Macqueen led the Rebels in their debut Super rugby season with a view to setting foundations for the longer term and his succession plan was now in place.
The Rebels will finish last in the five-team Australian conference and, unless they beat the Brumbies on Friday, will be last in the overall Super 15 standings.
Macqueen guided Australia to the 1999 World Cup title.
