Chennai, Jun 25 (PTI) Kolkata''s Amrittrajit Ghosh and his navigator Ashwin Naik gained a sizeable one minute 39 seconds lead over other contenders to clinch top honours in the South India National Rally at Sriperumbudur here today.

With tough conditions of the terrain making things difficult for drivers, the first day today witnessed many retirements, and the high category 2000cc (N plus) Class turned out to be a duel between Ghosh and his nearest rival Lohitt Urs and co-driver P V Srinivasa Murthy, the two cars remaining in the fray for top honours.

Delhi''s international driver Gaurav Gill (Musa Sherif) and Arjun Balu (Sujith Kumar) and privateer Arjun Rao Aroor (Satish Rajagopal) crashed out of contention in the second round of the Indian National Rally Championship (INRC) segment.

Mumbai driver, Sirish Chandran and Nikhil Pai combine, the championship leaders in Group N 2000cc Class, were in the lead all the way before their car Mitsubishi Cedia packed up in the last Special Stage. Their place was taken by veteran Rahul Kanthraj (Vivek Bhatt).

Rahul and Vivek enjoyed just one-second lead over Karna Kadur (Somonita Ghosh).

Vikram Devadasen (Somayya AG) were in third spot, 16 seconds behind the leader. .
