Latest from Sports - Deepak hogs limelight after Rajini crash

Coimbatore, Jul 2 (PTI) Deepak Ravikumar of Preethi Racing hogged the limelight in the premium Group A Super Bikes (600cc) class after favourite Krishnan Rajini crashed in the second lap of the MRF-FMSCI National Motorcycle Racing Championship at the Kari Motor Speedway here today.

Experienced Rajini, riding a Yamaha R6, slid off the track on entering Turn-1 when the gear went into neutral.

With Rajini slipping out of contention, 23-year old Deepak went on to win the 10-lap race from M Gautham (Moto-Rev India).

"I had problems with the clutch and when I went into the first corner, the gear fell into neutral and there was nothing I could do," said Rajini.

"Obviously I am disappointed, but it happens in racing. I was on a stock bike unlike others who were riding a pro-machine," added Rajini, who was fortunate to escape unhurt and has a chance to make amends in the second race tomorrow.

However, Deepak had a disastrous outing in the Group B (Open, 165cc) race as he crashed when running third, while TVS Racing''s K Jagan led from start to finish for a deserving victory.

The day was marred by a series of crashes, but none of the riders suffered major injuries. .
