Mumbai: The five wise men walked into the BCCI Head Office in Mumbai. The air was thick with rumours. Their BCCI bosses had instructed to send a young team to Bangldesh, and it resulted in an unprecedented step.
This man was axed from the one-day squad. The logic offered may have been that Sachin Tendulkar was rested. But this is the first time in 17 years that the great man was not picked in spite of being fit and available.
"No, they have not been dropped. They have been given a break. I have spoke to both of them (Tendulkar and Ganguly) and they have agreed, because India have 45 ODIs this year. And we can't just field one team all the time. And that is the reason why we have given them a break," Chairman of selectors Vengsarkar told reporters after announcing the 15-man team for the trip to Bangladesh.
Also joining Sachin on the list of 'rested' players for the one-dayers is Sourav Ganguly. The selectors had to explain hard as to why the man who just made a comeback to the team had been left out.
"It was entirely up to the selection committee. They felt like that, so they have selected the team," BCCI Secretary Niranjan Shah said.
Poor form and alleged attitude problems saw Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh also faced the axe along with Ajit Agarkar and Irfan Pathan from the Test team.
And when it came to picking youth, all the selectors had to show was Manoj Tiwary and Piyush Chawla's inclusion in the ODI team.
The Board wanted to punish those responsible for the team's early exit from the World Cup, whereas the selectors wanted maturity to go with youth. Having got a chance, it's now up to the players to prove themselves. For if they fail, the selectors know who is to be blamed.
