BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Queensland Reds captain James Horwill has led off the traditional battle for underdog status ahead of Saturday's Super 15 final, saying the Canterbury Crusaders' seven previous titles make the New Zealanders the natural favorites.
The Reds will be appearing in a final for the first time in rugby's professional era while the Crusaders will be making their 10th finals appearance after reaching the semifinals for the 10th straight year.
Horwill said the Crusaders' unmatched finals record gave them the strongest claim to favoritism, although the Reds finished the regular season in first place and have been beaten at home only once this season.
He said "we know they have been there, done that. It is a two-horse race on Saturday and we have to play our best game of the year to win."
