MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Collingwood overcame a simmering betting scandal to beat traditional rival Carlton by 19 points and preserve its lead in the Australian Football League after the 17th round of the Australian Rules competition.
Magpies coach Mick Malthouse praised his players' mental toughness as they put behind them last week's betting probe and beat Carlton 13.20 (98) to 11.13 (79) in front of 86,000 fans.
Captain Nick Maxwell was fined $5000 and star player Heath Shaw was suspended for eight weeks for passing information to family and friends which was used as the basis of small but losing bets on their own team.
