SHANGHAI (AP) — Peter Biros scored four goals, including the tiebreaker with three minutes left, to give two-time former champion Hungary an 11-10 win over Montenegro at the men's water polo world championships on Monday.
On opening day of the 16-team competition, Hungary trailed 9-7 after three periods but outscored Montenegro 4-1 in the final period. After Gergely Kiss gave Hungary a two-goal lead with 1:54 left, Nikola Janovic scored for Montenegro 30 seconds later, but his side could not get the equalizer in the final minute.
Hungary won the first world championship in 1973 and again in 2003 at Barcelona. Montenegro was part of a world title team in 2005 at Montreal when it was still linked with Serbia.
Serbia, the defending champions, take on host China in the last match of the night Monday.
In other matches, Aaron Younger scored with 44 seconds left to give Australia a 9-8 win over Romania, Spain led 7-1 after two periods en route to an 18-5 victory over Kazakhstan and Croatia also easily beat Brazil 14-5.
