SHANGHAI (AP) — Michael Phelps advanced in the preliminaries of the 200-meter butterfly at the world swimming championships, although he was only 11th-fastest among the 16 who reached the semifinals.
Phelps won his heat in 1 minute, 56.77 seconds on Tuesday swimming in the lane next to China's Wu Peng, who has beaten him twice this year in the event. Wu touched in 1:56.98 to grab the 15th spot for the evening semifinals.
Dinko Jukic of Austria had the fastest time of 1:55.26, followed by Leonardo de Deus of Brazil in 1:55.55.
Phelps, the world record holder, wasn't even the top American. Teammate Scott Clary qualified fourth.
