Latest from Sports - Crowd violence stops Myanmar WCup qualifier

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) — A World Cup qualifier between Myanmar and Oman was abandoned Thursday after home fans threw water bottles and stones onto the pitch, hitting some of the players.

Oman was leading 2-0, and 4-0 on aggregate, when the violence broke out in the first half. Players ran for safety to the dressing room. Myanmar football chief Zaw Zaw appealed for calm but was also forced to leave the pitch.

The unrest came after Oman was awarded a penalty, which striker Ismail converted in the 39th minute to make it 2-0. Midfielder Amad Al Hosni had scored the first goal in the 23rd.

It wasn't immediately clear whether the game would be replayed or whether Oman would be declared the winner by forfeit, normally a 3-0 victory.

Oman will almost certainly progress to the third round group stage, while Myanmar is likely to face disciplinary action from FIFA for the home fans' behavior.

Manager Paul Le Guen — who led Lyon to three French league titles and was most recently in charge of Cameroon at last year's World Cup — is attempting to take Oman to its first World Cup in Brazil in 2014.
