SHANGHAI (AP) — Breaststroker Rebecca Soni gave the United States a two-second lead at the halfway mark and the United States went on to claim gold in the women's 4x100 medley relay at the world swimming championships.
Soni, backstroker Natalie Coughlin, butterflyer Dana Vollmer and freestyler Missy Franklin finished Saturday in a time of 3 minutes, 52.36 seconds, not far off the world mark of 3:52.19 that China set in Rome in 2009 before high-tech bodysuits were banned.
China — Zhao Jing, Ji Liping, Lu Ying and Tang Yi — finished second in 3:55.61. Australia, with Belinda Hocking, Leisel Jones, Alicia Coutts and Merindah Dingjan, took the bronze in a time of 3:57.13.
Germany, initially placed seventh, was disqualified.
