Latest from Sports - South Korea beats Mali 2-0

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Second-half goals by Kim Kyung-jung and Jang Hyun-soo lifted South Korea to a 2-0 victory over Mali on Saturday in the opening match in Group A of the Under-20 World Cup.

Kim scored in the 50th and Jang converted a penalty in the 80th.

The start of the match was delayed by an hour when driving rain pelted the Colombian capital. The rain continued throughout much of the match, although the pitch held up well despite the deluge.

South Korea picked up 3 points in Group A, one of the toughest in the tournament. South Korea plays Tuesday against France in Bogota and Mali meets Colombia, also in the capital.

The South Koreans opened the scoring after Rim Chang-woo's long throw-in into the area bounced loose for Kim to poke it home in the 50th minute.

Jang converted an 80th minute penalty after Mali's Mohamed Traore pulled down Baek Sung-dong in the area.

Kim was probably the best attacking player on the field, with the South Koreans also defending well and looking organized despite the difficult playing conditions.
