    Double whammy for Railways

    Double whammy for Railways

Railways succumbed to their second outright defeat in two matches as left-arm spinner KP Appanna came up with a brilliant six for 68 in the second innings to give Karnataka an innings and 51-run win at the Karnail Singh stadium on Saturday.

Appanna bettered his Friday’s career best efforts of five for 39 to finish the match with 11 wickets in his kitty. Karnataka took only two and a half days to beat Railways at their home ground.

Such was their dominance that none of Railways batsmen could score a half-century in two innings and were removed for 162 in the second innings. The highest scorer for them remained Shivakant Shukla who scored 35 in the second innings.

    Brief Scores

Karnataka: 347 beat Railways: 134 and 162 (KP Appanna 6 for 68) by an innings and 51 runs.

    Delhi in trouble

Valsad: Hosts Gujarat will be aiming for an innings victory against Delhi going into the final day. Starting the day at 118 for three, Delhi were all out for 233 in their first innings. Adding insult to injury, Gujarat skipper Parthiv Patel asked Mithun Manhas and co to follow on and at stumps they were 170 for five still 117 runs behind Gujarat’s first innings score of 520.

Save Unmukt Chand (93, 12x4), who missed out on what would have been his second first-class century by seven runs, none of the Delhi batsmen applied themselves on a track which was good for batting. In fact Delhi lost their last six wickets in the first innings for 39 runs as they were shot out for 233 when they were 194 for four at one stage.

    Brief Scores

    Gujarat: 520. Delhi: 233 and 170 for 5 (U Chand 77, M Manhas 55 batting, IH Chaudhary 3 for 38).
