US asks Pak for access to Osama’s three widows

Washington: The United States has asked Pakistan to provide access to Osama bin Laden’s three widows in its custody as part of its thorough-going investigations into the Al Qaeda chief,s plans. It also wants access to additional material from the Abbottabad compound that is reportedly in Pakistani possession.

The three women are among several non-combatants in Pakistani custody after the US commando operation in the early hours of Monday.

“We need to work with them (Pakistan) on assessing all the evidence out of that compound and all of the evidence associated with Osama bin Laden’s presence there for six years. They have in their custody all the non-combatants from the compound, including three wives of Osama bin Laden. We,ve asked for access to those folks,” National Security Advisor Tom Donilon said on Sunday.

Donilon, who gave a series of interviews to US television networks, said that Washington had seen no evidence that the Pakistani authorities had colluded with bin Laden.

“I don’t have any information that would indicate foreknowledge by the political, military, or intelligence leadership in Pakistan, point one. Point two, though, is the fact that Osama bin Laden was living — and we now know operating — in a town 35 miles away from Islamabad in what is essentially a military town of sorts, with an important institution and other military installations. So these questions are being raised quite aggressively in Pakistan,” Donilon said.
