World News - Tube driver 'was unfairly sacked'

22 June 2011 Last updated at 11:17 ET A London Underground driver at the centre of a series of Tube strikes has won his claim for unfair dismissal, his union has revealed.

LU said Arwyn Thomas was sacked for unacceptable behaviour towards colleagues.

But the Rail Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) claimed he was dismissed because of his union role.

A series of walkouts has been staged this year. It is unclear if the remaining strikes will go ahead.

A six-hour strike took place on Sunday evening while three more have been planned for next week.

A 15-hour walkout is due from Monday evening to Tuesday lunchtime.

A separate 24-hour strike is scheduled to begin on Wednesday lunchtime and a final nine-hour walkout has been proposed for Friday afternoon and evening.

"Throughout this process LU have said that they would abide by the tribunal ruling," said Bob Crow, general secretary of the RMT.

"All that we are now asking them to do is stick to their word and get Arwyn back to work.

"I am seeking an urgent meeting with the managing director to make the necessary arrangements," he added.

London Underground has not yet responded to the RMT's comments.
