Hardline Nepal Maoist leader warns of protest

A top Maoist leader has threatened to launch a nationwide agitation if a controversial pact between the former rebels and a Madhesi alliance was not scrapped.

CP Gajurel, the Secretary of the ruling Unified CPN-Maoist party, warned to launch another ‘People’s movement’ if the four-point deal reached between the Maoist party and Joint Democratic Madhesi Front, a key partner of the ruling coalition, was not scrapped.

The Maoists and the Madhesi alliance had reportedly inked the pact ahead of last month’s prime ministerial election that included the provision to oppose the idea of a state restructuring commission and ensure en masse entry of Madhesi community living in the Terai plains into the army among others.

“Forming a Maoist-led Government is not more important than nation, nationalism and territorial integrity,” said Gajurel at a programme in the capital on Thursday.

The dissidents in the Maoist party led by hardline leader Mohan Vaidya “Kiran” and Gajurel have already staged protests in various parts of the country to oppose the pact.

They have also protested against the “secessionist” slogan raised by Defence Minister Sharad Singh Bhandari, a senior leader of Madhesi People’s Rights Forum (Democratic).

Bhandari had allegedly warned that the 22 districts of Terai would be separated from the country if the four-point deal was not implemented.

Gajurel said the controversy surrounding the four-point deal, which has provision for bulk entry of up to 10,000 people from Madhesi community into the Nepali Army, was more serious an issue than the handing over keys of Maoist arms containers.

However, Bhandari has denied making such a statmente, saying his statement was distorted.
