NC against national consensus Government under Bhattarai
Staking claim over Government leadership, Nepali Congress (NC) president Sushil Koirala has ruled out the possibility of forming a national consensus Government headed by top Maoist leader and Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai. Koirala he said it now is the turn of the NC to lead the next consensus Government.
Koirala’s remarks came in response to the claim made by Bhattarai’s political advisor Devendra Poudyal who said that a national consensus Government led by the Prime Minister will be formed very soon and main opposition parties Nepali Congress and CPN-UML are likely to join such a Government .
Speaking at a Press meet organised by the Nepal Press Union in Sukute of Sindhupalchwok district in the east of Kathmandu, NC president Koirala accused the Maoists of being the most-corrupt party in the country’s history.
He charged that the Maoists gobbled the allowance provided in the name of People’s Liberation Army.
He was hinting towards the irregularities practiced by the Maoist party while distributing the allowances to some 3,000 combatants who were absent from the camps.
Koirala also projected NC Vice president Ram Chandra Poudel as the Prime Ministerial candidate from the party.
Koirala also rejected the Maoists’ demand to increase the number of combatants to be integrated in the security forces to 9,000 from the current agreed number of 6,500.
Meanwhile, speaking at a separate programme in Kathmandu Nepali Congress general secretary Prakash Man Singh has demanded resignation of Bhattarai saying that the coalition Government led by him had failed to function effectively.
