Virginia Tech again: Shooter kills police officer, self
Five years after a horrific campus massacre, Virginia Tech University was in lockdown on Thursday with a gunman killing a police officer at a campus parking lot and then turning the gun on himself.
As the incident brought back grim memories of the 2007 massacre in which a gun-toting student went on the rampage, killing 33 people, university president Charles Steger said: “In light of the turmoil and trauma and the tragedy suffered by this campus by guns, I can only say words don’t describe our feelings and they’re elusive at this point in time. Our hearts are broken again for the family of our police officer.”
The university authorities declared the Blacksburg, Virginia campus safe after a five-hour lockdown, during which they scoured the large campus looking for the gunman, who was found dead in a parking lot, apparently having shot himself from the same gun that was used to kill the police officer.
The victim was identified as Deriek W Crouse, a father of five children. He was killed after he had stopped a driver at a traffic stop. At a televised news conference, police declined to go into details on the killer or his motive, saying investigations were still on.
