350,000 patients benefited from IIROSA medical aid last year
As part of its continued efforts to provide consummate health services to poor and needy patients around the world, the International Islamic Relief Organization-Saudi Arabia (IIROSA) extended medical treatment and provided medicine free of charge to about 350,000 people last year.
Secretary-General Adnan bin Khalil Basha said IIROSA has 48 health projects in 27 countries around the world including four hospitals, 20 dispensaries, three clinics, four specialized medical centers, a pharmacy and 16 various other health programs.
Basha said there are 184 men and women including doctors, nurses, technicians, pharmacists and administrators manning these projects. They include 40 in Asia, 137 in Africa and seven in Europe.
"Eight countries in Asia, 17 in Africa and two in Europe have benefited from the organization's health projects," he said.
The secretary general explained a number of health projects were implemented in collaboration with WHO, including the "Patient's Safety Program" successfully executed in a number of countries.
He pointed out the organization has implemented a program for the treatment of kidney patients in Jordan, another one for the treatment of patients suffering from chronic diseases in Saudi Arabia and a program to circumcise new Muslims in Uganda.
The secretary general added IIROSA has also organized camps for eye treatment and ophthalmological surgeries in Indonesia, Nigeria and Burkina Faso where thousands of people suffering from myopia and other eye diseases were cured.
According to the Secretary General, the number of people who benefited from IIROSA's health services included 93,881 patients in Asia, 237,315 in Africa and 13,710 in Europe.
Basha said 215 patients in Saudi Arabia were treated by the organization, including 81 cancer cases, 52 cardiac patients, 26 kidney patients, six eye patients, three with liver diseases and 17 individuals suffering from various diseases. He also said medicine was given free-of-charge to around 30 patients.
"The health services are an important component of relief and humanitarian work. They are of vital significance especially to the victims of natural calamities, civil wars, sectarian conflicts and other tragedies that lead to large numbers of injured people," he said.
Basha also said health services were of special importance particularly in refugee camps that are replete with old men, women and children in dire need of attention and care.
The secretary general pointed out that in addition to the construction of hospitals and health centers, IIROSA also organizes health caravans that visit distant towns and remote villages to examine patients and conduct surgeries whenever needed.
"The organization also establishes vaccination centers and execute programs to eradicate endemic diseases such as malaria, bilharzia, typhoid, cholera and others," he added.
Basha paid special tribute to the efforts of World Health Organization to combat endemic diseases and said IIROSA has implemented a number of medical programs in various parts of the world in close cooperation and coordination with the organization.
