US shuts embassy in Syria, withdraws diplomats
The United States on Monday shut down its embassy in Damascus and withdrew its diplomats, citing serious concerns in the wake of rising violence and failure of the Syrian Government to assure sufficient protection.
US Ambassador Robert Ford and all American personnel have now departed Syria, the State Department announced. “The recent surge in violence, including bombings in Damascus on December 23 and January 6, has raised serious concerns that our Embassy is not protected from armed attack,” spokesperson Victoria Nuland said in a statement.
