Kidnapped British Red Cross worker found dead in Quetta

The bullet-riddled body of a British employee of the Red Cross, who was kidnapped in January, was found dumped on Sunday in Quetta city of southwest Pakistan.

Khalil Rasjed Dale, 60, working as a health programme manager in the International Committee of the Red Cross mission, was kidnapped by unidentified gunmen in Quetta on January 5. He was a Yemen-born British national.

Dale’s body was found in a gunny bag dumped near the Killi Umar area on Airport Road in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province, according to Superintendent Police Malik Arshid.

“A local official of ICRC identified him as Dr Khalil Ahmed Dale,” Arshid told reporters. Dale had converted to Islam and had been working for the ICRC in Quetta for a year, police said. The body was shifted to Sandeman Provincial Hospital for autopsy. “The body bore multiple bullet wounds and marks of torture,” doctors said.

Media reports said unidentified gunmen had demanded a ransom for the release of Dale but the ICRC had refused to pay.

Police found a note from the body in which the kidnappers wrote that they killed the ICRC official because the organisation did not fulfill their demands despite repeated warnings, the Express Tribune reported.

It was not clear as to who was behind the kidnapping. Meanwhile in London, the UK Foreign Office today confirmed Dale’s death.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said: “I utterly condemn the kidnapping and killing of Dale, and send my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones as they come to terms with their tragic and distressing loss.”
