Obama lampoons Romney, himself at scribes’ gala
If you are President of the United States, you are supposed to be at your self-deprecating best at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. Surely, President Obama lived up it in full measure on Saturday night, poking fun at himself and his Republican challenger-to-be Mitt Romney.
Several others, including his Democratic rival-turned-Cabinet colleague Hillary Clinton, did not escape his potshots either.
No prizes for guessing his pet target for the evening. “I’m not going to attack any of the Republican candidates,” Obama said, turning to the man who is firing salvos at him on a daily basis. “Take Mitt Romney — he and I actually have a lot in common. We both think of our wives as our better halves, and polls show, to an alarmingly insulting extent, the American people agree…We also both have degrees from Harvard; I have one, he has two. What a snob.”
Watched by more than 2,000 guests, including top politicos and Hollywood celebrities, Obama then came up with a spoof on how Romney would treat his pet dog, if elected President. Yes, the man would put up the animal in a cage, strapped to the top of his Air Force One. It was a take-off on Romney, who reportedly put his pet in a crate tied to the roof of his station wagon during a family road trip back in 1983.
At Obama’s bidding, a video, supposed to be an attack ad, played. The clip showed images of Obama’s own pet dog Bo, apparently miserable at not being put on top of his presidential limousine but being held captive inside by “European style dog socialism”. A voice in the background: “American dogs can’t afford four more years of Obama. To them, that’s 28 years.”
Romney was not present at the gala, but his outgoing rival Newt Gingrich was. Ribbing the man who had till not long ago fancied himself to be the one who would be chosen the Republican nominee, Obama remarked: “Now, I know at this point many of you are expecting me to go after my likely opponent, Newt Gingrich…Newt, there’s still time, man.”
Obama then took on those hardcore conservatives who are still convinced that he was born not in America but in Kenya. Oama also raised a laugh on what less than four years at the White House have done to him.
“Four years ago, I looked like this,” he said as the screen showed a happy, young man.
