    Debt-ridden Gingrich finally quits race

Former Speaker Newt Gingrich, who once threatened to take the Republican primaries right up to the party convention in August, has finally called it quits with poor performance and mounting debts staring him in the face.

Having run up a debt of nearly $4.5 million, some of which is expected to be retired by his former rival Mitt Romney, Gingrich vowed to help Romney to defeat President Barack Obama in November.

“This is not a choice between Mitt Romney and Ronald Reagan. This is a choice between Mitt Romney and the most radical, leftist president in American history,’’ Gingrich said as he announced the suspension of his campaign in suburban Washington.

Short of a formal endorsement, he called upon fellow conservatives to rally behind Romney. Gingrich, who had projected himself as the only conservative alternative, had run down Romney as a “Massachusetts moderate” for the better part of the highly-contentious Republican primaries.
