China, Japan head for confrontation over disputed islands

China and Japan appeared to be headed for a confrontation over the disputed islands in East China Sea as Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Monday declared that his country would “never yield an inch” of its territory.

Wen’s comments came as Japan completed formalities to nationalise the uninhabited islands by paying USD 26 million. Despite repeated solemn representations of China, the Japanese government on Monday announced it would “purchase” part of China’s Diaoyu Islands from “private Japanese owners” and bring the islands under “state control”, Xinhua quoted Wen as saying.

Opposing the move, Wen said that Diaoyu Islands are an inalienable part of China’s territory and China will “absolutely make no concession” on issues concerning its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
