Indians root for Obama re-election: Pew study

If Indians, and not Americans, were to decide the fate of the upcoming White House race, President Barack Obama will be the clear winner with 67 per cent of Indians rooting for him, suggests a Pew Research Centre survey. This projection is based on Indians closely following the run-up to the US election.

The survey also found that Indians remain favourably disposed towards the United States – more than other major nations. It is particularly so among urban Indians, 58 per cent of whom see America in a more favourable light when compared to Russia (48 per cent), European Union (38 per cent), China (33 per cent), Iran (28 per cent) and Pakistan (14 per cent).

“Pakistan is a neuralgic concern for Indians. Just 13 per cent of all Indians (rural and urban) have a positive view of their neighbour,” it says, but notes that seven-in-ten still think it is important to improve relations with Pakistan through resolution of the Kashmir dispute (77 per cent), increased trade (64 per cent) and further negotiations (58 per cent).

According to Pew, only a third of urban Indians have a favorable view of China. “And those who say that China’s growing economic influence is bad for India are more likely to describe relations between the two countries as hostile.” As for Iran, the survey goes on to say that 52 per cent of Indians oppose Tehran obtaining nuclear weapons.
