Traffic box, exchange house damaged in freak mishap

A young man driving a Land Cruiser was injured after he knocked down a traffic light pole at the main intersection on the C Ring Road near Toyota Tower, causing disruption in the traffic lights system yesterday afternoon.
The motorist, according to witnesses, was a Qatari who seemed to have lost control of the vehicle as he suddenly took left at the intersection.
He was coming in high speed from the direction of the VIP Roundabout. As he curved left from the signal towards the road leading to the airport, his vehicle was flung away. It was around 4pm when the bizarre accident took place.
The vehicle slammed into a nearby Al Mana Exchange, but not before knocking down the traffic light pole that guides motorists towards the airport road.
The man suffered injuries and was rushed for emergency medical care. His condition could not be known at the time of going to press. It could also not be known if any staffer or customer was present in the exchange house at the time and suffered injuries due to the freak mishap.
An official from utility distributor Kahramaa told The Peninsula that the entire box system of the traffic light pole was shattered so he could not tell how much time it would take to repair it.
“Maybe, it would 12 hours, a day or two days. We can’t say with certainty how much time the repair would take. The box is fully gone,” he said.
A little before Kahramaa technicians arrived on the scene to assess the damage and begin repair work, traffic police diverted traffic, putting barricades.
