Vobsub & Subtitles + How to make srt files

    INFORMATION
Normally subtitles are 1 file and have SRT or SUB as extension. Those are text-based subtitles and easy to use (also small in size). But most movie releases (especially scene releases) add vobsub format subtitles. You can recognize them because it are 2 files (1 x .sub and 1 x .idx) and they are bigger in filesize (few MBs). Those aren't text based (just open them with notepad and see for yourself). You can't adjust font, size or colour.

    HOW TO USE THEM
To use them, it's very simple:
Give the two files the exact same name as the movie. Example:
    Code:
    Movie:
    2012.2009.BDRip.XviD-iMBT.avi
    Subtitles:
    2012.2009.BDRip.XviD-iMBT.sub
    2012.2009.BDRip.XviD-iMBT.idx
Now make sure all three files (subs + movie) are in the same directory. Now play the movie with your media player and the subtitles will load automatically.

    CHOOSE LANGUAGE
There are a few advantages with these kind of subtitles. The biggest advantage is that it only takes a few clicks and a few seconds to make them. Another advantae is that it can contain multiple languages.

    Example with Media Player Classic:

    MAKING .SRT-SUBTITLES
Since we prefer text based subtitles (srt), I'll show you how to make them. Download Vobsub (freeware):
    Code:
    http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/subtitle_tools/vobsub.cfm
Install it and open SubResync. Open one of the two subtitle files (sub or idx). Click on "Save as..." and select "Save as Subripper (*.srt)" and press "Save". Now you can convert them. Sometimes the recognition doesn't work well and you'll have to enter the same letters over and over again. You'll understand it when you're doing it.

HOW TO MAKE VOBSUB FILES (SUB/IDX) FROM A DVD
You can also do this with the program vobsub we just used to make srt files. Now open "VobSub Configure". Press "Open..." and go to the DVD directory (VIDEO_TS). Search for "Ifo and Vobs. for creating idx/sub (*.ifo)". Now look for the main movie (You'll find a lot of VOB files in that directory. Go to the number with the most or biggest VOB files, like "VTS_04_x.vob" or something. Then open "VTS_04_0.IFO"). Select a foder or make a new one for the subtitle files. Press "OK". Now you'll see if the DVD contains subtitles and which languages. If you want them all, just press "OK". Wait a minute....
Now you can adjust some things, but you can test or play with that later. Just press "OK" and you're done ;)
Now you can make srt files of them if you want to.

    TIPS
Don't use Windows Media Player as your video player. Choose for a good one. VLC player is very good because it has built-in codecs, so it'll play every possible video file. But I don't like to use it. Another good one is Media Player Classic (what I used in my screenshots). It's very good, but in order to play all files you'll need a codec pack. There are good codec packs: CCCP and K-Lite Codec Pack. Media Player Classic is already included in the KLite Codec Pack (Homecinema version, the best one) and also other useful tools.
    Download it here (freeware):
    Code:
    http://www.codecguide.com/download_k-lite_codec_pack_mega.htm

    OR
    http://www.cccp-project.net/
    +
    http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/download-media-player-classic-hc.html
    VLC Player:
    Code:
    http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
    Enjoy the movie ;)
