Move for plastic- free Vazhachal
Thiruvananthapuram: The forest department is all set to take immediate steps to curb the plastic menace in Vazhachal forest which is posing danger to the lives of wild animals there. Forest minister Binoy Viswom informed that a long term programme ' plastic free vazhachl' would be organised soon. The step is being taken on the basis of a feature 'Kattile Kola' published in Mathrubhmi weekend, on the hazardous effects posed by plastic wastes littered by the tourists which was causing danger to the wild animals. The feature unveiled shocking picture of how animlas were being brutally killed after consuming plastic wastes. Minister also informed that to make the programme a reality a meeting would be convened on May 11 at Thrissur collectorate which will be attended by higher forest officials and range officers. The meeting will also be attended by MLAs of Thrissur and Chalakkudy, Thrissur district collector, environment activists, Vazhachal Forest Development council memebers. A master plan will be prepared for the programme and then it will be implamented in the people convention organsied later. Till that period, survelliance will be fortified against littering plastic and awarenss programmes will be arranged. Though awarness probgrammes are still on air, the over flow of tourists pose problem. The ban on plastic had been implemented in all wild sanctuiries and it will be fortified in Vazhachal too. He also congratulated 'Mathrubhumi' for bringng the issue in the public attention.
