Kozhikode : A luxury dhow, with 147 foot length and 32.5 foot width, constructed for a Qatar-based businessman by a city firm, was launched to waters here today.
The jumbo-sized vessel by M/S P A Ahmed Koya and Company (AKC), was moved to sea by a group of workers led by ''Khalasi'' head K M Abdu this morning.
About 20-25 workers engaged for one-and-a-half-years to complete the hand work of the Dhow, or Uru, known in local parlance, made for leading businessman Sheikh Thamim Althani, AKC partner P O Basheer told UNI.
It would be towed away to Qatari shore from the deep sea by another similar vessel, which would come from that country in about a week, he said.
Other works, including mechanical and internel decoration of the dhow, would be completed on reaching at its destinaton before launching it for tourism, he said.
Mr Basheer said work on two more projects -- one same sized dhow to be used as a floating restaurant by a French firm and another with 80 foot length and 28 foot width, for a Qatari businessman -- were nearing completion.
The firm was undertaking dhow construction aimed at reviving the ship building industry hit hard due to lackadisical demand and providing employment, direct and indirect, to many in the locality, he added.
M/s Bichhu and Co had constructed a similar vessel for Dubai-based trader Ali Khallari in 2007.
