Kodiyeri stays away from resort inauguration

Kodiyeri stays away from resort inauguration

Palakkad: Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan on Sunday withdrew from the inauguration of a resort built illegally in the midst of Veeranoor tribal colony which includes in buffer zone of the Silent Valley. He informed the same to the media minutes before the time sheduled for inauguration. Kodiyeri said that he had withdrawn from the inauguration on the basis of report published in 'Mathrubhumi' stating the resort was constructed illegally in the land of tribes. He said a detailed probe will be held on many things including whether it was built on special protected areas. Though Kodiyeri stayed away form the function, MLA of the constituency and deputy speaker Jose Baby attended the function and inaugurated it too. The local CPM leaders also stayed away from the function.

Even though the tribes approached higher authorities on that day when the construction of the resort was began, stating that the land belongs to them, all went to deaf ears and no action was taken. Chandran, a native of the colony said that they already gave complaints to chief minister and as per his direction then to the collector and also to forest officials. When all these went futile that they held march with placards on April 13, to a function to supply wood to tribes which was attended by forest minister Binoy Viswom and Tribal welfare minister Ak Balan . But no one took the complaint seriously.
