KSRTC owns debt of Rs 46.41 cr

Kozhikode: According to the Motor Accident Claim Tribunal verdict KSRTC has to pay an amount of Rs 46.41 crore as accident compensation. The amount is much higher than the annual income of the corporation. Lack of insurance cover is the reason behind this huge debt. The corporation is facing 22,000 accident cases in various courts. More than half the buses do not have insurance protection. The corporation only insured 2,353 buses of the total 5,407. Among them, only 758 possess insurance. The corporation has the reponsibility to provide compensation to accident victims caused by buses which are not insured.

Each month the Motor Accident Claim Tribunal gives verdicts for more than 100 cases. The verdicts were mostly favouring the accident victims. But in most cases, KSRTC gives a callous attitude as cases as old as 25 years are being dealt. The Corporation only think about compensation when the case leads to confiscation of buses and high court order.

It is only the KSRTC which sells its assets to give compensation. Most of the private buses are plying with insurance cover. But when the corporation was formed, KSRTC was allowed to ply without insurance initially inorder to avoid need for big money. But KSRTC is still paying for that temporary escape.
