Madurai: Shorn of the usual fare of glamour and violence, Tamil film 'Maa,' directed by a differently abled person and with a physically challenged hero and artistes, has found no takers among distributors, forcing the producer-cum-writer to declare he would release it on May 14. 'The film has been my dream for 27 years and it will come true when it is released in theatres. We do not wish to create a record, but have have just done our duty in helping differently abled persons', Madan Gabriel, who also assisted in direction, said. He said the music has been scored by a visually impaired Gideon Karthick. 'The scenes were explained to him in detail before he began recording and he did so without any hitch.' Completed in just 50 days, the film has differently abled artistes speaking dialogues in the local dialect. Those selected for various roles were trained for five months. Madan told reporters here that the film director Fatima Beevi is wheelchair bound, while make up artiste Thavamani is physically challenged. The artistes were selected through competitions, he said, adding that all technicians who worked in the film are now in cinema field.

'FEFSI had given them free membership,' he told PTI. Heroine Ambika, a nursing college student, who is not physically challenged, had only one condition -- that she wear a sari through the duration of movie, he said. The story revolves around a man whose legs are disabled. He falls in love with a girl and proposes to her, but face many obstacles. How the girl accepts him forms the rest of the story Gabriel said the movie would be dubbed into Telegu and Hindi. Overseas rights would be sold after gauging the response from the public, he said.

He said they had written to Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, seeking tax concessions, as production cost had touched Rs two crore. 'Limca Book of Records', had included this film in their 2010 edition, he said. PTI
