No mining by Reddy brothers in disputed areas: SC
The Supreme Court has said that the Reddy brothers will not carry out mining work in disputed areas. However, they are free to mine in undisputed areas of Andhra Pradesha and Karnataka. The apex court said that border fencing will be done by Survey of India. The apex court was delivering its verdict on the issue of illegal mining by controversial Reddy brothers in Obulapuram and Bellary areas of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
Janardhan Reddy and his brother Karunakara Reddy, both of them ministers in Karnataka government, are facing allegations of indulging in illegal mining of iron ores by encroaching upon the large chunk of forest land in the area causing heavy damage to the environment and also causing heavy financial losses to the state exchequers of the south Indian states.
A special bench comprising Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan and Justices SH Kapadia and Aftab Alam will pronounce the judgement and decide the fate of powerful Reddy brothers, who were behind a campaign to oust Karnataka Chief Minister Yeddyurappa from power earlier this year.
The Supreme Court-appointed centrally empowered committee (CEC) had in its report urged the Supreme Court to impose a blanket ban on mining in the two states by Reddy brothers.
The CEC had reccommended to the Supreme Court not to allow the Reddy brothers to list the heaps of iron ores already extracted.
Andhra Pradesh government had challenged the state High Court order permitting Reddy brothers to continue mining activities.
The Supreme court had stayed the High Court order and subsequently refused to lift the stay on mining.
