SC allows state government to take over Golf club

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday issued an order allowing the state government to take over the Thiruvananthapuram golf club. The verdict was pronounced when hearing a petition by the club members seeking to cancel the Kerala High Court order permitting to take over the golf club. The reponsiblities to run the club would rest with the committee headed by the chief secretary. Earlier, the vacation bench of Justice Deepak Verma and Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan, asked the state government to tell the 'modalities' under which it would accommodate the existing members of the club after the licence is cancelled. The state government has prepared a draft proposal to acquire and operate the Golf club without taking over the fiinancial liablities.

The state said that after the takeover of the golf course it would be handed over to the Kerala Sports Council. The court was also told that the state would maintain the 'greenery and landscape of the 25 acre golf course'. The state told the vacation bench that apart from accommodating all the 600 existing members of the club, the public would also be given a chance to play golf under the new arrangement. In this the SC isuued the order.
