Coca-Cola disagrees with Kerala government recommendations
Thiruvananthapuram : Soft drink major Hindustan Coca-cola Beverages Private Limited (HCCB) disagreed with the recommendations of the high powered Committee and the proposed following action by the Kerala government. In release issued here yesterday, HCCB said, ''the said Committee, in our view, was set up with the pre-determined and unproven conclusion that the operations of Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Private Limited ('HCCB') have caused loss to the residents of Plachimada.'' In spite of the fact that numerous scientific studies by independent experts and investigations by the Kerala government itself had shown that HCCB was not the cause of local watershed issues, it added.
''It is our opinion that any government committee or panel reviewing claims should first determine through scientific study and through established process of law whether any damage was caused to the residents of Plachimada, and second, if such damage was caused, who was responsible,' it further added.
The Kerala government had taken a decision to realise Rs 216.26 crore from the HCCB as compensation causing multi-sectoral damage through operation at its Plachimada Plant in Palakkad district, following the recommendation by a 14-member high-powered committee to study about the damages in Plachima
