15 dams will be renovated: Premachandran

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Water Resources Minister N K Premachandran today informed the state Assembly that the government was planning to renovate 15 old dams in the state through financial assistance from the World Bank. Replying to questions by Mr V Chenthamarakshan of the CPI(M) and others, he said the renovation works of the old dams under the State Irrigation Department and Kerala State Electricity Board would be made through Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project with the financial assistance of the World Bank.

The state government had already submitted a project report for Rs 211.17 crore, including Rs 117.7 crore from the Irrigation Department and Rs 99.47 crore from the KSEB, before the Union Water Commission, he said adding the World Bank in principle had accepted the project.

Accordingly, it was accepted in principle that of the total amount submitted before the Centre, 80 per cent of the loan would be from the World Bank and the remaining 20 per cent share of the state government could be utilised for renovation works, he added.

Premachandran said the government was planning to start the renovation works in January 2011 and complete it in six years.
