Opposition stages walk out over Attappadi land encroachment issue

Thiruvananthapuram: The Opposition on Wednesday staged a walk out in the assembly on the land encroachment issue in Attappadi. Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishanan of the Congress moved a no-confidence motion on the issue. In his notice Thiruvanchcoor alleged that a company which set up wind mills have illegally encroached land at Attappadi. When only 230 acres of land is needed to set up windmills, the company encroached 400 acres of land. He criticised the government for not taking any action though the project officer sumbitted a report demanding action against responsible officers. Minister for Welfare of Backward & Scheduled Communities A K Balan said that the district collector will probe the issue and if the officers were found guilty, action would be taken. Minister S Sarma also said that if any failure from the part of officers in the registration department is found then action would be taken against them too.

Opposition leader Oommen Chandy said that a comprehensive probe on the issue is needed. The government should take the matter seriously and probe must be conducted by a assembly committee. As it is clear that the land had been encroached, the functions of wind mills in Sholayar taluk must be stopped immediately. After the reply from ministers, the speaker denied permission for an adjournment motion and the opposition staged a walk out.
