    Research into snail menace started

Thiruvananthapuram: With more complaints about the onslaught of snails coming from different parts of the state, Kerala
government has asked Kerala Forest Research Institue to conducat a study and suggest measures to destory the snails. Answering a submission by Adoor Prakesh (cong) on problems faced by people due to snails, State Forest Minister Binoy Viswam said salt have been found to be effective in destroying the snails.

Stating that government had taken the matter seriously, he said people have been asked to use salt to prevent the proliferation of snails, whose origin is stated to be in Africa.

Attacks by the species have been reported from state capital and other parts of the state. It multiplies in large numbers and destroys vegetables and other agriculture crops.

Since it is bigger than the normal type of snail found in Kerala, the villagers call it 'African snail', believed to have made its
way into the plains of Kerala from the Western Ghats.

The fast-breeding mollusk has emerged as a serious threat to farming. The villagers were compelled to launch the snail-hunt as the slimy insect began moving into houses leaving a sticky trail in its wake. PTI
