Forest research institute told to take steps to destroy snails

Thiruvananthapuram: An increasing number of complaints about the menace of a large type of snail from all of Kerala has
prompted the state government to ask the Kerala Forest Research Institute to conduct a study and suggest measures to destroy them. Forest Minister Binoy Viswam, answering a submission by Adoor Prakesh (Cong) on the issue, said the government viewed the matter seriously. People have for the time being been asked to use salt to prevent the proliferation of these snails, whose origin is stated to be in Africa, he said. Attacks by the species have been reported from the state capital and other parts of Kerala. It multiplies in large numbers and destroys vegetables and other agriculture crops. The snail, believed to have made its way into the plains of Kerala
from the Western Ghats, has emerged as a serious threat to farming. Villagers were forced to launch the snail-hunt as the slimy insect began moving into houses, leaving a sticky trail in its wake. On July 23, villagers of Konni panchayat in Pathanamthitta had killed one lakh such snails, nicknamed 'African snail' as it was bigger than normal types of snails found in Kerala, by sprinkling a mixture of tobacco and salt on them. The snails were then mass-buried in a pit.
