Munnar ordinance: CM rejects Rajendran's plea

Thiruvananthapuram: Triggering unrest within the ruling party, chief minister V S Achuthanandan rejected revenue minister K P Rajendrans's demand to renew the Munnar ordinance to set up a township project. Though the cabinet decided to renew the ordinance, the CM 's stand has created a row. The CM had denied to pass it to the governor for sanction. VS believes that setting up of the township is a way to help the Tatas. It is for the first time that the CM's standing against an ordinance had been approved by the cabinet. Sources report that the CM had smelt something and had objected to it. On Saturday night, Revenue minister K P Rajendran met VS at his Cliff House residence and requested him to demand the governor to give sanction for renewing the ordinance. But the CM took strong exception to that saying it would help the Tatas and other land encroachers.

The ordinance was to construct a township by acquiring 1061 acres of land in Munnar. Earlier, the cabinet recognized the ordinance and issued a notification. But the bill for the same was not passed in the assembly, which paved way for renewal of the ordinance. As the CM too had denied the same the ordinance might be cancelled. He is of the assumption that the ruling leaders, who had posed a hurdle to evict encroachers in Munnar, are trying to give legal protection to encroachments through the ordinance. The ordinance is also for acquiring land at a high price in Munnar.

Rajendran had intimated the CM's stand to the CPM leadership. This might create another row in the ruling party. Tata company had moved the HC pointing out that the ordinance includes the places which had been under the consideration of the Supreme court.

VS believes that Revenue minister and his team are behind the ordinance. They had earlier objected to the CM's plan to evict 17,922 acres of land alleged to have been encroached by Tata. The CM had asked the minister on the need to buy land when the government can acquire it legally in Munner. But Rajendran did not respond.

If the ordinance comes into force, the CPM and CPI office, illegally constructed in Munnar, would get legal protection. Knowing all these, VS took such a stand.
