    Eliminate extremism: VS

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan today wanted people to fight against extremism and communalism spreading in society to maintain peace and harmony and to protect the freedom of the country. In his address after taking salute at the Independence Day parade at the Central Stadium here, he said there were small sections in some religions who blindly believed that only their faith was right.

'These sections try to create enmity towards other religions. They are not for virtue or peace. The need of the hour is to eliminate extremist activities and maintain communal harmony to protect our freedom, unity and sovereignty,' Achuthanandan said.

Extremism was growing in the country not only in connection with religion but with other groups also. Groups like the so-called
Maoists who indulged in armed attacks were disturbing peace in some parts.

Youths in these regions were turning into anarchism as land reforms could not be effectively implemented there as in Kerala where the reforms had been in place five decades back. 'The centre should take steps to take cue from the Kerala model of land reforms and implement it across the country,' the Chief Minister said.

He also said corruption could not be rooted out in the country even after six decades of independence. Despite people's resistance and the presence of an alert media, corrupt practices were continuing, which was evident from the Spectrum scandal and the allegations related to the Commonwealth Games, he said.

'If corruption and irregularities are not checked, the faith in the democratic system will be eroded,' he said. Achuthanandan said Kerala had made good progress in the last few years in providing land for the landless. The tribal forest land
act could be implemented to a great extent and the government was taking steps to provide one acre each to adivasis whose land had been alienated.

With the completion of the EMS housing scheme and the One lakh housing scheme, Kerala would become the first state where all families had houses, he said.

He wanted the centre to implement the Food Security Act ensuring that each family got 35 kg of foodgrains at Rs 2 per kg. The Supreme Court's directive to distribute foodgrains stockpiled in FCI godowns to the poor was notable, he said.

On the development front, Vallarpadam terminal was nearing completion. Work on other initiatives like Vizhinjam international container terminal and Kannur airport had already started.

While the centre was selling out shares of Public Sector Units, Kerala could revive loss-making PSUs and had taken steps to start eight more PSUs in the state, he said.

Earlier, an impressive independence day parade was held. The Chief Minister gave away the Presidents' medals and state medals to winning police officials and bravery awards. PTI
