Thodupuzha: A mentally challenged woman, who was rehabilitated to a government old age home in Muthalakkodam, Thodupuzha from Thiruvananthapuram general hospital, died due to lack of treatment. The patient was suffering from diarrhoea. Seven more persons, including 5 mental challenged, were also admitted to the Thodupuzha taluk hospital.The deceased was Aisha Beevi, 60. Mathachan from Vannappuram died on Saturday. The authorities at the old age home said that he died due to old age ailments. Due to complaints of increasing diarrohea cases, doctors from Thodupzuha Taluk hospital, Riji and Usha, held check ups at the old age home and as per their direction 7 inmates were admitted.
It was on August 5 that 31 persons, including mentally challenged, were brought from Thiruvananthapuram to Thodupuzha due to repair works at the Thiruvananthapuram general hospital ward number 9, where they were staying. They were brought here with the intervention of the Kerala Social Security Mission. It is alleged that these rehabilitated people were accommodated without making any special arrangements as there were already 62 inmates in the old age home. The 11 mentally challenged persons were kept in a separate cell in Thiruvananthapuram. Some had non-curable diseases and they were kept along with other patients at the old age home. The inmates were showing signs of diarrhoea since last Wednesday.
