New Delhi: Kerala, in a statement filed with the SC-appointed higher level committee on Mullaperiyar, sought to consider the direction to construct a new dam at Mullaperiyar. The state has also asked to consider the security of the present dam. The next meeting of the committee would be held on August 23. The high level committee, headed by SC former chief justice A S Anand, was appointed by a five-member constitutional bench of the SC on February 18.
The committee consists of two members each from two states and two experts. Kerala recommended Supreme Court retired justice K T Thomas. From Tamil Nadu, Justice A R Lakshmanan and two water experts are also in the committee. The committee after its first sitting in June directed both states to submit their needs and directions.Apart from the chances for another dam, Kerala has also asked to examine its structure, construction capacity and management of the dam.
