Anti-defection laws be brought in if UDF voted to power

Kottayam: Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala has said if the United Democratic Front was voted to power anti-defection laws would be brought in and the rule by expert committees over elected representatives of Panchayat Raj institutions would be put to an end. Inaugurating a meeting of the newly elected representatives at mandalam and block levels here, Chennithala said the congress leadership has reiterated the UDF coalition partners that the party was not ready to forefeit its self-respect in the seat sharing process during the coming elections in local body institutions.

He said the party had already initiated talks with UDF partners. As the party that leads the UDF 'we shall take all steps to move
ahead united in the elections and the party has the responsibility to ensure that the coalition partners get seats which they deserve and are legitimately their share', he said.

Chennithala assured that the selection of candidates would be a transparent mechanism and that the mandalam and block level bodies would be entrusted with the selection process. 'There will be no sponsorship by senior leaders', he said.

Blaming the LDF government, he said it had even failed to hold local body elections on time, there by pushed the administration at the grass root level in to uncertainty. PTI
